About Alive
For nearly 30 years, Lydia, the artist, had suffered with suicidal ideation. From the moment they were born they were quickly saddled with the belief of their presence being burdensome. Later becoming diagnosed with autism only increased blame, their differing needs punished with mounting violence.
It was only through discovering the internet they were shown reality. Distant community gave hint what life could be like, a calmness so unfamiliar it sounded like fantasy. Despite their disbelief, it existed in the back of their mind. The beckoning risk charmed them- and the second an opportunity approached, they fled.
Years of dedicated rehabilitation were necessary. Many times they were unsure if they made the right call and should give in. But with growing skills and support, a new normal established. As sudden and as natural as life itself, they were jolted by an idle thought previously unknown:
“I love being alive”.
