After finally dropping his saddle to the ground, the rugged cowboy sighed, worn. He settled into his resting place for the night, beginning his ruminations. Yet another day running, dodging, playing tricks to live free. He never thought he’d be considered lawless, certainly didn’t fancy himself that way. Regardless of self-reflection, anxiety began to grow in his chest while the pine branches reached over him like claws preparing to strike. He knew in the eyes of judgement, he couldn’t dodge Fate’s wrath forever.
A weight collapsed into his lap, rousing a surprised grunt while shaking him away from the fraught wanderings. Before he could focus, he felt the dry wrapper of tobacco pressed to his lips. Though the cowboy bristled at the suddenness, he quickly accepted his new position as someone's cushion. Piercing eyes scanned the interrupted party with interest, announcing a subtle invitation. Red embers of the lit cigarette sparked in eagerness between his scissor-like teeth as he awaited an answer. The cowboy knew what was going through his partner's head and cocked a confrontational smile. "I don't like that look in your eye, Briar."
Seated proudly, Briar's response dripped with fake innocence, “Need a light?”
The cowboy considered the offer. There were many fears he carried. At times he wondered if he’d regret ever leaving behind that old life on the ranch. With the handsome figure now waiting in his eye line, it didn’t take long for him to remember the loneliness of being hidden in plain sight. His wild partner may be a handful at times… but showed him a darling truth: Without risk, there was no reward.
Accepting the proposal, he signaled a firm nod. Eyes met as his partner leaned forward. Embers danced between them, bridging the two parties under the intimate blanket of night. This was the cherished connection his old life could never have. Years had passed sluggishly until his chance meeting with Briar.
Now, his fire was lit.
More worries would come at dawn, but they could wait. Tonight, the cowboy was ready to claim one of many rewards.
